FAQ’s about Profiles

What is a profile?

A profile is similar to a scrapbook that helps the birthmothers get to know you and your family. It is generally more of a photo album, with small captions about the pictures included and some information about your family and home. A profile can be made by yourself, or you can hire someone to do it professionally for you. Generally, the profile is given to the birthmother upon selection as a keepsake for her.

What should our profile contain?

Your profile should contain a “Dear Birthmother” letter in the front, a few words about your family, and a good amount of photographs describing your life. Included should be happy photos of you, your spouse, any children you may have, important family members, pets, your home, etc. Pictures from your wedding day and holidays are always a plus. Be sure to describe, in a few words, each of the pictures so the birthmother’s feel that they are getting to know you.

How big should our profile be?

Your profile shouldn’t be any bigger than an 8 x 10 sheet of paper. Remember, that it must be able to fit into files and shouldn’t be too overwhelming for the birthmothers. Most profiles we have received generally consist of 8-10 pages. Don’t forget to add color!

What should our Dear Birthmother letter say?

A “Dear Birthmother” letter is your chance to speak directly with the possible birthmother of your child. It is a way for you to connect with them and leave an impression, while also allowing the birthmother to get to know a personal side of you. It should explain why you’ve chosen to adopt and how family has reacted to the news. You can also write about how you feel about the birthmother giving your family the gift of a child. If you plan on sending updates, include that information as well.

Who can help make our profile?

A profile can be made at home, but if you are too busy or want the professional touch there are professionals who can assist you in creating your profile. You can generally find them online through a search engine. For local business, we refer to Creative Adoption Consultants in Palm Harbor, Florida, and their website is www.creativeadoption.com.

Can we make the profile our selves?

Yes you can and here are some websites that can help you.

Is a profile necessary?

A profile is not necessary, but it is highly recommended. A birthmother will generally have between 3-5 couples she is choosing from, and they typically always pick couples with profiles versus couples without because they feel closer to them and more comfortable in placing their child with that family. It does not have to be extraordinary, just something with a personal touch to help the birthmother feel better about her decision.
